And when you're done - when you've hit every panel, clayed the glass, topped it off with a proper sealant - you feel something. You feel like you did something that mattered.
The Thing Car People Get
My car has been places. It's been through salt season, construction dust, the particular bird situation at the grocery store parking lot, and whatever that orange tree in the neighbors' yard drops in summer. When I wash it, I'm not restoring a museum piece. I'm maintaining something that earns its keep.
Here's the thing about taking care of your car - really taking care of it - the work adds up. A properly maintained car with a decent coat of wax or ceramic coating will hold up longer than one that's been neglected for years. That's not obsession. That's just math.

Neighbors give you a look. Coworkers make a comment. The guy at the gas station watches you wipe down your wheels with a detail brush and wonders what kind of person does that.
The judgment doesn't bother me as much as it used to. Because I know something that most people don't - or don't care to know. I know what my car looks like when it's dirty and what it looks like when it's clean. I know the difference between a car that's been neglected and one that's been cared for.
And when I drive past my own car in a parking lot and it catches the light right - when the paint looks deep and the glass is clear - I don't need anyone else to understand.
